Overview

This editorial project involved designing a magazine feature using supplied written content and imagery.

The article, Technically Fashionable, looked at the relationship between fashion and emerging technologies such as AI, VR and digital design, which gave me the opportunity to create a more futuristic editorial direction.

The project included the main article spread, cover-related work and supporting page layouts, mainly created in InDesign with imagery edited in Photoshop.

Problem

Because the written content had already been supplied, my role was to make a fairly large amount of information feel visually interesting and easier to move through.

The challenge was experimenting enough for the design to feel futuristic without making it difficult to read.

Solution

I built the layouts around a contrast between structured editorial columns and more experimental elements.

Important information was pulled out through highlighted sections, quotes and coloured boxes instead of giving every block of text the same visual weight.

I also experimented with text wrapping, overlapping elements, unusual image placement and stronger changes in scale.

Photoshop helped me push the supplied imagery further through colour, shadows and more cinematic treatments, while InDesign was used to bring the typography and page layouts together.

Reflection

This project strengthened my understanding of editorial hierarchy.

It made me think much more carefully about how someone actually enters and moves through a page, rather than simply arranging text until it fits.

I particularly enjoyed finding ways for the typography, imagery and graphic shapes to interact with each other. If I developed it again, I would tighten the grid slightly so the more experimental elements felt even more consistent across the publication.
