Woolworths App Rebrand
June 2024

Overview

This was one of my earliest UX/UI projects and was completed during my first year of university, when I had very little previous experience in the design industry.

The project involved redesigning parts of the Woolworths app while learning the basic stages of the UX process.

Problem

Grocery apps contain a huge amount of information: products, prices, specials, categories, quantities and shopping actions.

At the time, I was also learning basic interface principles while trying to solve that problem, so I did not yet have the understanding of spacing, component systems and interaction patterns that I have now.

Solution

I worked through the existing shopping journey and reorganised the interface around common actions such as finding a product, browsing categories, viewing specials and adding something to the cart.

I experimented with stronger grouping and larger interactive areas to make those actions easier to recognise.

The screens were then connected into a prototype so the concept could be experienced as a journey rather than viewed as separate layouts.

Reflection

I would probably rate this project around a 4–6/10 compared with what I can produce now.

There are definitely things I would change: the spacing is inconsistent, some areas contain too much information and the interactions could be much smoother.

I do not necessarily see that as a reason to hide it, though. It is useful because it shows a very clear difference between my first attempt at UX/UI and the way I approach interface projects now.

If I redesigned it today, I would start with reusable components and a clearer design system, consider accessibility much earlier and carry out more usability testing before moving into the final interface.
